Stella’s Southern Bistro in Simpsonville

If I had a restaurant, I would no doubt name it after one of my dogs—most likely our dear departed yellow Labrador retriever, Cassie. So I was delighted to learn that Stella’s is named not for either of its owners, Jason and Julia Scholz, but for their eight-year-old black Lab, Stella.

Befitting a Lab’s happy-go-lucky spirit, Stella’s is a casual, welcoming place, with Julia playing the gracious hostess and managing the front of the house. White wainscoting and cool pale blue walls give off a decidedly Lowcountry vibe—not surprising since Chef Jason and his wife lived in Charleston before moving to the Upstate in 2006 to open High Cotton in downtown Greenville, where he was executive chef before parting to open his own restaurant.

As Americans, we like all things instant and high speed. We read fast. We drive fast.

And perhaps more than anything, we eat fast. You can't drive down the street (quickly, no doubt) without passing a fast-food restaurant.

But there is a counterculture to the fast-food way of life.

Stella’s Southern Bistro combines casual and classic nicely. The dining area is definitely in the “upscale classic” mode, with low lighting, simple white tablecloths and a wall of wines in the back. The bar area is a little more informal. It’s separated by a semi-circle wall near the front of the restaurant and has a flat-screen TV above the bar.

This was my first visit, but will not be my last. Cannot wait to go for dinner. Lunch was awesome; true southern cuisine with a flair. Started off with a cup black bean/squash soup that was full of body, taste and just the right kick of spice, main course was country fried steak medallions that were so tender you cut them with your fork.

FOODIE FEST directed us to Stella's last night for an unbelievable treat! Having never tried HangerSteak.. I thought I would give it a try. The waitress was very knowledegable about the cut of meat and the preparation by chef Jason.

As a food junkie, I can be very particular about the restaurants I frequent and the type of food I order. For example, I never order seafood unless I’m at the beach, I only order pasta at an Italian restaurant and I’ve never ordered a pizza from a convenience store. However, recently I had to compromise on one of my peeves, as I visited a low country seafood restaurant in Upstate South Carolina called Stella’s Southern Bistro. After I continually heard rave reviews about the Charleston-style restaurant, I finally visited the Greenville  restaurant for dinner.

The atmosphere of this restaurant is great- I'm surprised there is a restaurant like this in the chain-dominated little town of Simpsonville! I usually order the shrimp and grits, but everything they have is good. They have homemade biscuits with strawberries and cream for dessert that are amazing.

This is the best meal I've had in Greenville. My wife and I had a complete meal, starting with the Simpsonville Lemonade that was very sweet and nice, and she had a glass of wine. We ordered an appetizer that came out very quickly, as we were starving. It was the Stella's Sampler (Fried Green Tomatoes, Toasted Bread with Pimento Cheese and Crab Dip and Pickled Okra).

Stella’s Southern Bistro offers a variety of dishes found mainly in the South. The staff was very knowledgeable and excited about the dishes that were served. I started my meal with the Creamy Crab Dip, which was served with fried green tomatoes and grilled toast points.

Stella’s Southern Bistro has a simple yet elegant interior that pleases the eye and adds to the fine dining experience. I started my meal with their superb corn chowder. For someone who does not even like corn, I found it to be quite delicious.

Chef-owner Jason Scholz received national acclaim as executive chef at High Cotton before opening this upscale Southern bistro. Casually elegant, Stella’s dining room is outfitted with dark wood trim with soft, subtle lighting, clubby leather furniture, starchy table cloths, local art and an inviting bar.
